Beauty Care Needs Met On-Site
The convenience of Iris Place's on-site beauty salon and barber means all you have to do is walk in to get your hair and nails done. Of course, appointments are available.
Besides getting services, being at the salon is an experience. The women spend half a day, talking, gossiping, laughing, having an overall great time! The salon is open to outside clients, and there's a message therapist who comes in regularly and offers services at a discounted price.
Fitness Right at Home
Iris Place residents enjoy a variety of health and fitness activities, from weekly group exercise classes to anytime access to on-site fitness equipment.
Our fitness center has been molded to fit the specific needs of the residents. For example, there was a stationary bike that wasn’t used for a while, so it was replaced by another machine at the request of the residents. We have spring water on all three floors to promote hydration. The community also has a large 20 acre campus which is great for walking, and there's even a putting/chipping green! There is an occupational and physical therapist who have offices on site.
Let Us Serve You
Enjoy restaurant-style dining served with courtesy and caring by our staff who know you. Chef-prepared meals are served every day in Iris Place's dining room. Sit with friends or invite your family for a special occasion in our private dining room. Each meal is designed to meet the unique nutritional needs of community members.
The chef meets with residents weekly in order to get their feedback and requests on the menu and individual meals. The whole dining experience is definitely a collaborative effort in our community. Two things residents rave about is the Chef's seafood salad and casserole.
Make Memories Exploring the Surrounding Community
There’s so much to explore in the Athens area and Iris Place makes sure that residents experience as much as possible. Regular outings to favorite restaurants, local events, and more introduce residents to all their neighborhood has to offer and connect them to the surrounding community.
Some of the popular bus outings are trips to the North Carolina Casino, Botanical Garden, Library, Fine Arts Building UGA, and the Lucy Cobb Institute. You can join the "lunch bunch,” a group that goes out once a month to different restaurants.
Life is Never Boring
Iris Place's comprehensive calendar is packed with both recurring activities and special events. The variety of available activities is meant to enrich the whole person by stimulating physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, creative, social or vocational wellness.
Residents with a green thumb love to help take care of the community garden. Sometimes the fruits of their labor even end up in the chef's meals! We are in Athens GA, home of the Georgia Bulldogs, so there's a party every time they play! Trader Joe’s donates flowers every Monday, and the residents have the opportunity to make arrangements for the community and their apartments. We also have a 90 year old man that comes in and teaches line dancing every Friday!
Pets Make Life Better
Furry friends are welcomed as residents at Iris Place. We understand how important the companionship and bond that seniors share with their pets. We’re delighted to have cats, dogs, birds, and even bunnies as part of our community.
Residents love when therapy animals come to the community to play and cuddle. For the resident pets, there are monthly playdates. We have a registered feral cat colony that several residents can approach and pet because of the time they spend with them. We also have a resident with an exotic bird that speaks. Once a month, she puts on a show for the residents.
Stay Connected With Technology and WiFi
Iris Place is equipped with WiFi access to help you stay connected throughout common areas. You can use a community desktop computer to stay up to date or connect your personal devices to the WiFi.
We have Tech Tuesdays, an "Apple" resident runs it. Residents can ask any questions they may have about technology and their devices, the resident even teaches them about droids!
Travel and Adventure Is Available
The exclusive Travel & Stay program offers residents exciting opportunities to travel around the country, with free stays of up to seven days at any of Holiday Retirement’s more than 260 communities. Three chef-prepared meals are included with each trip. Visit all 43 states or just choose a favorite new location or two.
Lend a Helping Hand
Many residents find a sense of fulfillment in donating their time and skills to a cause close to their hearts.
We have a group of knitters that knit hats for homeless and blankets for dementia patients. The community also organizes a book bag drive. We load the bus with book bags and residents and go to the local elementary schools and hand them out.
Outside volunteer groups visit the community, a musical teacher has her students play here for live performance requirements, and many different school choir groups come and perform. We also offer high schools the opportunity to come in and read stories, and reciprocate with the residents going to elementary schools to do the same.
