When Jill arrived at Holiday Vista de la Montaña, an independent senior living community in Surprise, AZ, northwest of Phoenix, she brought a lifetime of impressive memories with her. Her story spans continents, decades of travel and a creative spirit that inspires those around her.
“I’ve been a resident here for almost three years,” Jill notes. In addition to making the community her home, Jill is also celebrating another milestone. This year marks 50 years since she became a U.S. citizen during America’s Bicentennial in 1976. The timing makes her citizenship anniversary especially meaningful, as it takes place alongside the nation’s 250th birthday.
Born in England in 1935, Jill’s journey has taken her from Oxford to Hong Kong. She’s lived on Arizona ranches and in Oregon’s Rogue Valley. Eventually, Jill came back to the Arizona desert for good.

After completing nursing training in Oxford, she joined the British Army. As she puts it, “I joined the Army because I wanted to travel.”
That decision led her to Hong Kong, where she spent two years serving as an Army nurse. “I chose to be stationed in Hong Kong, and I loved it there. I got to help families and children,” she recalls.
Her story continued when she arrived in Arizona in 1963 to work as a private-duty nurse. She married, raised three children, and built a life that would eventually include travel throughout much of the world.

- Paris while visiting family in Europe
“I guess the only continents I haven’t visited are Africa, South America and the Poles,” Jill says with a smile.

Absolutely. Jill’s creativity has room to grow at Holiday Vista de la Montaña. Her apartment includes a dedicated space for one of her lifelong passions: creating art with fabric.
“I’m a crafter,” she adds. Jill learned to knit as a child, spent years painting and discovered a love of quilting after retirement. Today, she creates fabric collage art and recently completed what she calls her “autobiographical quilt.”
The striking artwork tells the story of her life through stitched images of England, Oxford, Hong Kong, Monument Valley and the many places she has called home. “There’s one for England. There’s one for Oxford. There’s one for Hong Kong,” she explains.
Having space to continue her favorite hobbies was important when choosing her home at Holiday Vista de la Montaña. “When I was looking for a community, I wanted a two-bedroom. One bedroom for my crafts. Here, I could get what I wanted,” she says.
What is life like at Holiday Vista de la Montaña?
For Jill, independent senior living offers both independence and connection. She participates in exercise classes, attends music events and enjoys spending time with neighbors she has come to know well over the past three years.
“I have friends in the community. We talk, spend time together and share our news and things,” she says.
She has also watched the community evolve through a major renovation. “I lived here when they recently remodeled,” Jill recounts. “And I love what they’ve done. It’s beautiful.”
The improvements have helped create welcoming spaces where residents can gather and enjoy community life together.

Certainly. With family members throughout Arizona and beyond, Jill stays close to family while enjoying an active lifestyle of her own.
Her life story reflects resilience, strength and a willingness to embrace new experiences. Those qualities are still evident today as she shares her artwork and stories with those around her.
As Jill celebrates 50 years of U.S. citizenship, her story offers a reminder that retirement communities are filled with extraordinary people whose experiences enrich daily life for everyone around them.
When asked what inspired her initial love of travel and learning, she smiles, “Just fun. Just fun.”
