Grandparents Day in 2020 is on September 13th! Established in 1973 as a nationally recognized holiday, Grandparents Day is observed on the Sunday following Labor Day. Marian McQuade is known as the founder of Grandparents Day. She made it her goal to educate youth in the community about the important contributions seniors have made. The day’s purpose is to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children and to help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older adults can offer.
Learn something new
Grandparents Day reminds us that we’re never too young or too old to learn something new. Spend the day learning something together. Consider making a trip to the museum to see a new exhibit or watch a documentary. Be sure to spend time discussing what everyone thought. You’ll be surprised to hear the responses of the youngest and oldest members of the family.
Volunteer together
Does grandma or grandpa volunteer or have a cause that is close to his or her heart? Round up the whole family and volunteer together. Whether it’s knitting caps for awareness initiatives, serving a meal at a homeless shelter or cleaning up a community garden, your family will get to see grandma and grandpa in action and learn more about their volunteerism passion.
Be social
Don’t live near your parent? Surprise them with a special social media post or email! Consider adding photos from throughout the years and including stories and memories you have in which your mom or dad made a real impact on you. Don’t forget to include your kids’ thoughts too—or they can
